16U Advances to the DVHL Finals

u16s Win in Triple overtime – shootout to Advance to the League finals.

#Playoffs — Game two of the Weekend against the number 2 seed WBS Jr Pens was a heart stopper! In a very spirited matchup the 16s prevailed in a triple overtime shootout! This game was filled with great effort and a ton of heart from both teams.

Central Penn clearly controlled play play early and got on the board first when Gavin Maurer (’00) feed Kevin Eshleman (’01) in the slot with a pass that ending up in the top corner. The Jr Pens answered with a nice down low dirty goal, that was initiated off a 3-on-1 rush. The score was tied at 1 after the first. 

Into the Second, the Jr. Pens took the lead on the power play early in the second. Then the tide started to turn again and Central Penn put on a lot of pressure and late in the second the Panthers tied the game on a shot from the point from Tommy Knapp (’01) that found it’s way through a crowd in front of the Jr Pens goalie, the loan asset went to Martin “the Candlestick” Zavadan (’00). 

Less then 20 seconds into the third the Jr. Pens again took the lead with a very quick goal. But the Panthers answered right back, gaining control in the offensive zone, Zavadan made made a pass to Cooper Younger (’01) at the point, he in turn walked toward the middle of the ice improving his shooting angle and took a low-hard shot that Eshleman tipped and Maurer banged home to tie it at 3. Just under 3-minutes later Maurer made a strong play down low behind the net and feed a great pass to Kristin Schauren (’00) for the go-ahead- goal. With time winding down, the Jr. Pens pulled their goalie, and with just 30 seconds left snuck in the equalizer.

The first 3-minute overtime was controlled by Central Penn as the sides skated 5-on-5 — The second 3-minute overtime 4-on-4 and a bit more even, with the best scoring chance coming from a breakaway from the Jr. Pens — the third 3-minute overtime was more in favor of the Panthers in a 3-on-3.

On to the 5-player shootout! Both sides were denied on their first attempt. The Jr. Pens took the lead with their second attend off the post and in glove side on Panther goalie Creed Goshorn (’01); CPPs second attempt just missed the net. The Jr. Pens third attempt provided one of the highlights of the game! The shooter came in wide, decked and cut back, Goshorn went down, popped back up, and sprawled to make a spectacular save! The Panthers third shooter was robbed glove side. To round 4, the Jr. Pens rolled out the 2nd leading scorer in the league and Goshorn was up to the task making a great blocker-side save; Kevin Eshleman was up for Central Penn and he buried his chance getting the game back to tie. Goshorn stood strong for the fifth shooter and that brought up Maurer for Central Penn – on his attempt he faked the pushed the puck wide pulled it back and send Central Penn to the Finals on a silky back-hand.
