MATTHEWS, STEIN, AND WHALEN EARN EHLP WEEKLY HONORS
BOSTON, MA — The first showcase of the season is officially in the books for the Eastern Hockey League Premier (EHLP). Over the past 3 days, all 12 EHLP teams converged at the IceWorks Skating Complex in Aston, PA. With every team in action, there were plenty of worthy candidates for our weekly honors.
The EHLP is pleased to announce that Nate Matthews (Central Penn Panthers), Alex Stein (Central Penn Panthers), and Dillon Whalen (Vermont Lumberjacks) have been named the TSR Hockey Stars of the Week.
This upcoming weekend in the EHLP includes 12 more games on the schedule from Friday through Sunday, and the next set of TSR Hockey Stars of the Week will be released on Tuesday, October 16th at 10:00am. Catch the EHLP action all season long on HockeyTV.
FORWARD – NATE MATTHEWS (CENTRAL PENN PANTHERS)
Matthews and the Panthers won both of their games at the October Showcase, with the 2000-born forward racking up 13 more points to his name. The native of Mountville, PA had a pair of goals and 6 assists as Central Penn shutout the Valley Jr. Warriors by the score of 11-0 on Saturday night. Matthews then followed things up with a 5-point performance against the Connecticut Chiefs on Sunday. In total, Matthews ranks 2nd in the league in scoring with 31 points to his name. The Panthers are now set for a big home-and-home series this weekend against the Philadelphia Revolution.
DEFENSEMAN – ALEX STEIN (CENTRAL PENN PANTHERS)
While Matthews was pushing the play up front, Stein was holding things down on the blue line. The 2000-born defenseman had a pair of assists in each of his team’s wins over the weekend, giving him 10 total helpers for the year. In total, Stein has 13 points through the first 9 games this season, and has at least a point in 8 of those contests. The Panthers will be looking to lean on Stein even more over the course of the next month, as 7 of the team’s next 9 games put them on the road for tough matchups across the EHLP.
GOALTENDER – DILLON WHALEN (VERMONT LUMBERJACKS)
Flipping over to the New England Conference, and the Vermont Lumberjacks won 3 of their 4 games this past weekend at the showcase. The ’99 netminder was between the pipes for the wins over the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers and the New Jersey Renegades, stopping 59 of the 60 total shots that were sent his way. With the pair of victories Whalen now owns a record of 3-1-0 for the season, to go along with a 1.64 GAA and .953 save percentage. Since losing their season opener, Vermont has won 7 of their last 8 games and are set to hit the road this weekend for a pair of games against the Walpole Express.
HONORABLE MENTION – BRENDEN YINGLING (CENTRAL PENN PANTHERS)
Sticking with Panthers theme, Brenden Yingling added more points to his phenomenal 2018-19 season to date. The reigning TSR Hockey Forward of the Month scored 5 goals and dished out 8 assists at the showcase, and for the year, the 2001-born forward now has 33 total points.
